Plans

Well, this is what I can write about, since I practically don’t have any workshop (OK, this is not quite true – I have 2 in the University, and my own at home… far away). Does this fact holds me back from spending every minute with shoes? Of course not! So what can I do without my workshop?

1. Teaching: As an accredited master, I am obliged to teach to preserve my craft. And what could be better way, than to make uprising designers understand how handwork is better and different than soulless factory?

2. Write books: Well, this is the PLAN. I’m working on a practical, comprehensive guide for shoemakers with everything I know. OK, that might be 2 books.. ๐Ÿ™‚ but anyway.. I really want to save the knowledge that I’ve collected, because I believe there aren’t many original sources left, whom we can turn to. I was lucky to have been able to do so. I learnt from masters, who learnt from other masters..

Which leads me to the following plan:

3. I want to organize a real school/college. Here in USA. In a few years.
Why it is important? As we say in Hungarian “a half eyed is a king among blinds”. It means we don’t have any more controll. As much as I want to put it nicely, let’s face it, nowadays, anyone can claim, that he/she is a master, as he’s been doing this for x years. Would you trust someone who practice medicine x years without a paper? Of course you would insist on an accreditation, right? Our craft is more than 4000 years old.. If we don’t do something about education and proper justification, we will die out. Let me assure you: this is not about x or y great shoemakers, who gathered their knowledge from various places and have been working for many years. I know great shoemakers without any paper. But, we can all admit, that there will be others claiming the same, without any proof.ย  We HAVE TO do something about it.

  1. Hi Marcell, I live in the U.S. and I would be excited to attend your U.S. based shoe making school. I’m hoping you will start an intensive apprenticeship next summer in the U.S. with more opportunities to study when you open your school. Let me know when you are all set up. Thanks.

  2. Dear Marcell,

I look forward to purchasing your books and taking one or several of your complete shoe making apprenticeships in the future. Please add my name and e-mail to your mailing list for future updates.
    Kindest Regards
